It’s Time to Take a Stand for What’s Right

D. Littlejohn is a 15-year-old high school freshman who lives in New Jersey with his parents and two older sisters. Talking to D, I recognized his generation represents America’s conscience because he spoke with clarity and precision about racism, discrimination, and the need to protest police brutality. He kept reminding me that little has been done to hold the police accountable for the murder and mistreatment of Black people. UnHidden Voices Episode 3 It’s Time to Take a Stand for What’s Right featuring D. Littlejohn is a rallying call from D’s generation to all of us.

In the Black community, if a person seems like they are wise for their age, we think they have been here before. We call those people “old souls.” D is an old soul. When we talked, I imagined that my grandfather Joe Herbert, or D’s grandmother, my Aunt Carmen, was speaking through him because he was so clear and direct. When I asked him why he protested police brutality, D said,

Black people are just tired of getting harassed and arrested every day and not doing nothing about it. This has been going on for years. I feel like it’s time to take a stand for what’s right.

D is not afraid to speak the truth and say what needs to be said. I have known that about him since I called him to wish him a happy fifth birthday and he asked, “Who is this?” I said, “It’s Aunt Aaminah. Happy Birthday!” He responded, “Aunt Aaminah, I haven’t spoken to you a day in my life!” At the age of five, he was telling me that I was not doing my job. How dare I call him for his birthday and not speak to him any other time in his life? I was failing in my responsibility to keep our family connection. D helped me realize that when he was five.

Through my discussion with D, I learned that his generation is fed up. They are tired of being discriminated against and they are ready and willing to fight injustice. They are unafraid. D is going to make you as proud as he makes us. He is also going to hold you accountable for standing up for justice.
